Don’t Be a Whore–Do Your Chores

Living on campus can be super exciting because you’re finally away from home and you’re all on your own–no more mommy or daddy telling you what to do. I know you might be excited to be off on your own, but there are some perks of being home that you don’t realize until you leave. If you’re like me you might have gotten used to having mommy always clean up after your mess (lol). As time goes on, there will be some things that you might miss from home. One of those things definitely includes having your mom constantly being up your butt about chores. Yes, I know, you might be like “wtf, why would I want someone telling me what to do?” however, you’d actually be on a schedule for getting your space clean and tidy.

With that being said, most college dorms or apartments might seem very small–especially if you have roommates, and you also might think there’s not much to do in such a small space so it can’t possibly get dirty. However, this small space is where you’ll be living for an entire school year and it can get pretty messy if you ask me.

It’s hard at first to suddenly realize you have to do all of these things alone but it makes you more independent and responsible. I promise you, your life will feel much more in order (and a lot less gross) if you get into a habit of completing the following chores that one might forget to do!

1. Dust is a Must

I know a lot of people who easily forget to dust and those who do actually try to dust their room are probably struggling. Sometimes you might try to dust a certain spot but it literally seems like you’re just moving the dust all over the place and it’s not getting anything done.

For those of you who are struggling…my grandma actually taught me that you have to get the cloth or whatever you’re using a little damp so it can trap all the dust particles. Doing so can help you avoid having the dust particles fly all over the place and having it just end up elsewhere.

2. Expired Food Will Ruin Your Mood

Okay so I definitely know I’m not the only one who randomly craves something that you know is in your fridge and then when you go get it… it’s freaking expired. Yes. Let’s face it, this has happened to us at least once in our busy lives. For this reason I strongly encourage you to go through your mini fridge in your dorm or the fridge you might have in your apartment or house frequently.

Not only will you save yourself from the complete disappointment of not being able to eat that specific thing you’ve been craving all day but you can also avoid the smell of expired food lingering in your fridge. No one wants a smelly fridge!

3. In Between the Sheets

WASH YOUR SHEETS PEOPLE. I cannot stress this enough. I’ve heard of people who go through their entire semester without washing their sheets. I’ve also witnessed some mysterious, unexplainable stains on them as well. Uh, Gross. Especially if you’re doing some freaky deaky things– not washing your sheets regularly can definitely cause a smell to build up.

On another note– sometimes us students are always rushing out of bed to get to class on time or maybe even work. Since you’re in a hurry you might think “it’s fine I’ll just fix my bad later”. NO don’t do this. It takes about 5 seconds to just spread out your sheets and comforter. I literally do this every time I have a morning class and I’m rushing to leave. I take about 5 seconds to just spread out everything. It might not be the best looking thing but it definitely makes the room look a bit tidier. Trust me doing this goes a long way!

Also, if you have a bad habit of eating on your bed like me– you might be spilling stuff and leaving crumbs behind, so make sure you keep dusting off all this and change your sheets. I really don’t think you want people coming over and seeing random food stains on your bed then having crumbs when you crawl into it.

4. Trust Me–Don’t Be Dusty

Last but not least, personal hygiene! Seriously if you cannot manage to keep yourself clean then you definitely will not be able to keep your room clean and tidy as well. I’m 100% sure you do not want to have body odor and it eventually letting it stink up your entire room–your roommate might actually want to punch you in the face at this point.

This is one thing my roomie and I absolutely despise, body odor. We hardcore judge people who smell all the time, unless they have some sort of medical problem then that’s a different story but 9/10 times it’s just because they’re just lazy and must not care about themselves. I honestly don’t think it’s that hard keeping yourself smelling nice and fresh. I’m a strong believer in if you look good then you feel good. I think the same idea applies to if you smell good then you feel good as well.

Hope you guys found these tips helpful this week!

  1. I loved that with each little tip you included a personal detail. I think that was so cute and made this really personable! And omg thanks for the dusting tip lol whenever I dust my room the dust is flying everywhere, I’ll definitely make the cloth a little damp now and try it.

  2. I really enjoyed reading your post because you gave us great tips! Being in college can definitely make you lazy and neglect on your cleaning because of the transition from home to college. I loved your tip about making your bed before going to class, I do the same! There’s nothing I hated more than coming home after a long day of class and my bed looks like a whole mess. Ever since, I have been making my bed right away after waking up and it just makes me feel so much better. Overall, it was really effortless reading this post & the gifs you used were funny and went perfectly with what you were saying!

  3. Okay I absolutely love the little titles for each chore, it was really cute and personal. The first one is definitely one I needed to read because dusting is something I don’t even think about most of the time which is probably horrible lol. These tips were very helpful because we are transitioning into a different time of our lives where we must be responsible adults (ughh do we really have to?)

  4. I hate doing chores hahaha, it is lucky for me since I am not living with my parents and I have my individual bedroom. The living room that I share with my roommate is super tidy cuz they do the chores and my bedroom is super mess up. The funny thing is when I do video chat with my parents, I would go to my roommate’s room and skype with them pretend my room is super tidy.

  5. My roommate last year needs to read this. He had so much trash everywhere in the room it felt like I was in an episode of Hoarders. He had food everywhere and food on the ground and his clothes were EVERYWHERE. Sometimes his underwear would be on my bed for some reason. Ew.

  7. Love it! I used to be so bad at washing my sheets but as I’ve gotten older I’ve realized it’s just straight up gross to live in your own filth for months and months. I also make it a habit to NEVER eat in my bed just cause the crumbs really freak me out when I go to sleep LOL also I live in a dorm again so my room is tiny and I don’t like the food smell. Great tips, very relatable, great work!

  8. Your post was so funny to me!! I absolutely hate cleaning because I do it often! As stated the other day in class, I hate cleaning bathrooms!!!! Now that I’m not living in a dorm and in an apartments, the fact that there is a bathroom I have to clean by myself scares me LOL. I think when you’re living in a dorm though there are some struggles! For example, my dryers were ass so my sheets never dried!!! I needed to dry them like 3x or let them air dry. Very inconvenient and hard which made me loath cleaning LMAOOO. All in all, love how you connected to you personally and still made it relatable 🙂

  9. Holy crap I loved this. I’m kind of a neat freak with a sprinkle of OCD mixed in there, and my roommate since sophomore year is the complete opposite..yikes lol. BUT thank you for writing this post because I feel like most people don’t do their cleaning especially when theyre in a dorm! and those dorms can get RANK lemme tell ya, there’s ALWAYS dust on everything! I kinda wanna forward this to my roommate, who literally has never washed her sheets. Especially if youre not off campus, most of the time in a dorm you’re either on/in your bed or at your desk so clean it people!!! The titles are always so funny, great job girl!!!!
